Born and raised in Minnesota, he studied at Macalester College before transferring to the American Academy of Art in Chicago, where he graduated. After being drafted in 1966, he served two years in the U.S. Army.

Following his service, he began a 33‑year career in advertising, ultimately becoming President, Chief Creative Officer, and co‑owner of Martin Williams Advertising in Minneapolis. Under his leadership, the agency earned a national reputation for creativity, serving major clients including Target, 3M, and U.S. Bank. He retired in 2001 and relocated to Naples, Florida.

In Naples, he was an originator and board member of Royal Palm Bank of Florida and later served as a director for two publicly traded Minneapolis‑based companies. During this time, he also illustrated two golf instructional books.

He has long been active in charitable work, supporting organizations such as the Minneapolis United Way, Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Livingston, Montana, and the Immokalee Foundation in Naples.

He and his wife moved to Aiken, South Carolina, in 2013 so Arlene could pursue her equestrian interests, returning to Naples in 2024. They now happily reside at Bentley Village.
